History of Camp Cottonwood

Lake County's Most Iconic Camping Area

  • The camp has been a source of joy for Lake County residents and their friends since 1949. In that year, Camp Cottonwood Inc., a non-profit organization, was formed to operate the camp for the benefit of the young people in Lake County.

  • Camp Cottonwood sits on the shore of Cottonwood Meadow Lake, which is nestled between the crests of Cougar and Grizzly peaks, six miles off the Klamath Falls-Lakeview Highway (Oregon Hwy 140).

  • Over the years, the use of tents and open camping has been replaced, through the construction efforts of volunteers, with a kitchen, dining hall, sleeping cabins, a water system, and finally, indoor toilets and showers.

  • Patronage is still largely youth and church organizations, although family, and education and civic groups are welcome.

  • Camp Cottonwood resides fully on U.S. Forest Service land, and is operated under a permit with Fremont-Winema National Forest. (The U.S.D.A. Forest Service is an equal opportunity employer.)
